The University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) seeks an Executive Vice President (EVP), Business Affairs & Chief Business Officer reporting directly to President Dr. Daniel K. Podolsky. The EVP, Business Affairs is a strategic leader of business and service-related departments across the UTSW campus. The EVP oversees departments providing operational, financial, and administrative support to more than 30,000 faculty, staff, and students in the furtherance of the tripartite mission of UTSW: to educate physicians, scientists and caregivers; discover better treatments and cures with a real-world application; and heal by providing the best care possible, with a focus on continuous improvement. In this highly dynamic role, you will be responsible for facilitating the successful strategic, operational and service-related performance of the entities that comprise UTSW, including the integration of their respective interests across the campus.
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, one of the premier academic medical centers in the nation, integrates pioneering biomedical research with exceptional clinical care and education. UT Southwestern is located in Dallas, Texas, and is the only academic medical center within the 13-county Dallas-Fort Worth area, which has a census of 8.3 million and is the fastest-growing region in the country, with a projected population between nine and ten million in 2030.
UT Southwestern is led by Daniel K. Podolsky, M.D., an internationally renowned gastroenterologist and member of the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Podolsky has served as UT Southwestern’s President since September 1, 2008, and oversees all aspects of the mission, including supervision of four schools, the health care system, institutional advancement and business operations.
This role is responsible for the following business and service-related departments including, but not limited to, Accounting, Budget and Resource Planning, Contracts Management, Sponsored Programs Administration, Supply Chain Management, Facilities Management and Capital Construction, Human Resources, Information Resources, Information Security, Safety and Business Continuity, Auxiliary Services, Real Estate and the University’s Police Department. This position is responsible for the management and growth of over 15 million square feet of clinical, administrative, educational and research facilities across multiple campuses, including an annual operating budget in excess of $6.5 billion. The EVP, Business Affairs plays a key role in required interaction with the University of Texas (UT) System and Board of Regents, representing UT Southwestern’s interests and assuring conformance with system policies, procedures and reporting requirements.
The EVP, Business Affairs is one of four EVPs who report directly to Dr. Podolsky. Collectively, these EVPs have responsibility for the full spectrum of services and assets of the institution. In addition to the EVP for Business Affairs, these include the EVPs for Academic Affairs, Health System Affairs, and Institutional Advancement. They are a cohesive and collaborative team that is dedicated to the mission and shared goals of UT Southwestern.
Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience in many of the following areas:
- 15+ years of experience in large, complex university setting(s) with significant health sciences enterprise(s). Knowledge of and commitment to the academic missions of research and education.
- 15+ years of progressively responsible senior management experience directing and improving business, systems, talent/workforce, and finance operations.
- Demonstrated business, financial and analytical acumen; P&L experience. Experience developing and managing complex operating budgets including experience with sponsored programs administration; funds flow and indirect cost recovery.
- Experience leading one or more of the following business and administrative functions: human resources, IT/cybersecurity, supply chain, real estate/facilities management, campus security.
- Experience with successful mergers & acquisitions and/or the development of joint ventures and strategic partnerships.
- A proven commitment to leading and developing high-performing teams in a complex academic, clinical and/or research environment.
- A graduate degree in business administration, finance, accounting, or related field.
