Vice President, Payor Strategy
Position Summary:
Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) seeks a strategic leader to shape and negotiate payer and valuebased care contracts across the enterprise, including the BILH Performance Network (BILHPN), behavioral health, ancillary services, and continuing care organizations. The Vice President of Payor Strategy drives systemwide payer strategy, oversees commercial, Medicare, MassHealth, and employer contracting, and ensures alignment with BILH’s financial and operational goals.
This executive leads negotiations, strategic payer planning, valuebased model development, market analysis, and integration of contracting, finance, and analytics to support enterprise goals. The VP plays a critical role in advancing population health, sustaining competitive reimbursement, and guiding longrange system strategy. The role reports to the President, Population Health & Managed Care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide enterprise-level strategic leadership for all BILH and BILHPN entities regarding payer strategy and market direction.
- Develop annual and multiyear payer strategies aligned with system goals and evolving policy and regulatory landscapes.
- Lead negotiations for commercial, Medicare, MassHealth, and employer contracts, including both valuebased and feeforservice agreements.
- Design, negotiate, and evolve valuebased payment models that advance system performance and financial sustainability.
- Meet BILHPN and enterprise financial targets related to contracting, revenue, and budget performance.
- Direct the Managed Care Contracting, Contract Analytics, and Medical Economics teams to ensure competitive reimbursement and optimal payer performance.
- Partner with BILH Solutions to develop employer strategies, narrow networks, and innovative payment models.
- Provide senior leadership with insights on payer strategy, business development, and competitive positioning.
- Serve as a key liaison to payers for escalated issues and strategic discussions.
- Monitor policy developments at the state and national level to identify emerging risks and strategic opportunities.
- Integrate contracting, finance, and analytic capabilities to support negotiations, settlements, and strategic planning.
- Improve operational processes, performance metrics, and contract management standards across payerrelated departments.
- Participate in longrange organizational planning, aligning payer strategy with systemwide operational and capital priorities.
- Lead Boardlevel discussions on managed care contracts and strategic payer initiatives.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years senior leadership experience in managed care strategy, contracting, finance, or operations within a healthcare system, integrated delivery network, or payer organization.
- Expert knowledge of healthcare reimbursement methodologies, payment reform, and valuebased care models.
- Proven ability to lead complex negotiations with significant financial and strategic impact.
- Experience in population health management and familiarity with clinical performance considerations.
- Demonstrated success leading crossfunctional teams and managing both direct and matrixed staff.
- Ability to operate effectively under pressure, balancing competing stakeholder priorities while maintaining system alignment and credibility.
- Strong relationshipbuilding skills with executives, payers, boards, and system leaders.
- Skilled in driving operational efficiency, performance accountability, and enterprise alignment in dynamic environments.
- Strong organizational planning, staff leadership, and talent development capabilities
Pay Range:
$225,000.00 USD – $280,000.00 USD
The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. In addition to base compensation, this position may be eligible for additional compensation, which may include performance-based incentive bonuses.
