Christian Help

Company Overview

Christian Help is a community support organization focused on purposeful giving. Life presents unexpected and unfamiliar challenges. We strive to meet the unique needs of our community in a manner that only our local, nimble organization can – by offering the hope and tools needed to help stabilize, encourage, plan and move forward with dignity.

Our mission at Christian Help is to respond to situations of emergency and need with immediacy and simplicity, respecting the dignity of all persons in the spirit of Jesus Christ. For more than 50 years we have been entrusted to work with our neighbors to meet the needs of our community, providing a spectrum of resources. All services are offered in person, on-site, free of charge, without need for appointments. We assistance all, with the resources at-hand, without unnecessary proof of need. We listen to each client's situation and do all we can to provide relevant support through the Free Store; Emergency Financial Assistance; Food Pantry; Career Closet and vocational support services; job readiness, personal finance, insurance, and/or nutrition classes. Our annual "Back to School", "Prom Pop-Up" and "Holiday Toy" distribution programs serve financially struggling area families. Located in the heart of downtown Morgantown, Christian Help is a community hub for people in unexpected situations, volunteers seeking to connect, and donors wanting to give back – each supporting the needs of others.

Your help is welcomed in all forms. Whether you contribute your time, items or money, you support our overall mission and create goodwill in the community. It takes a village, as many hands make light work. Community supported and supportive, everyone involved contributes to this work and to progress in our communities.

Company History

Christian Help was founded by Sister Thecla Shiel, a former-Principal of St. Francis Elementary School who grew up in the Scotts Run area of Morgantown. During her 1972-1982 service in the Morgantown area, Sister Thecla found that economic disparities were keen among her students’ families. She would connect those in need of resources with useful items no longer used by others. Moved by Pope Paul VI’s call for more involvement in social justice, Sister Thecla Shiel gathered a few like-minded individuals to help with this initiative. On February 26, 1975, Christian Help, Inc. was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization, faith-based but unaffiliated with any church or denomination. According to Sister Thecla, “although the center will begin by helping to meet the material needs of people in emergency situations, the founding group sees Christian Help as having the potential for doing much more by helping to develop a greater awareness among Christians of their responsibilities and their opportunities for building a socially just society.”
